Home remedy for dog cough

Recently one of our girls picked up some sort of viral upper respiratory infection at a dog show she went to. We connected the dots quickly because there were a few dogs coughing at the show and exactly a week later she started coughing as well which is the right incubation period for a lot of these viruses. The virus also gave her conjunctivitis in both eyes which we had to get a prescription ointment from our vet to treat. For the cough though we used a home remedy which turned out to be very effective, not just for Ruth but for Ysera as well who also got sick with the exact same symptoms a week later. Full disclosure: I’m not a veterinarian and there can be many causes as to why your dog is coughing, from something benign like a simple virus to something very serious like heart failure so if the cough is persistent and ongoing and your dog is showing other symptoms like being lethargic please take them to the vet! This remedy will simply soothe their throat and help their immune system to fight off the infection for a viral/bacterial type cough. Ingredients: Pure Chamomile Tea Good quality raw honey – we used a raw honey with royal jelly in it Pure coconut oil 1 cup hot water Method: Pour a cup of boiling water into the dog bowl and put a bag of tea in, steep for about 15 minutes. While the water is still warm but not boiling hot add a heaped teaspoon of the coconut oil followed by a heaped teaspoon of...

Absolutely unacceptable puppy buyer behavior

Today one of my dog show friends shared something very upsetting for any responsible breeder to see. She found an ad on Craigslist of a puppy buyer selling their 4 month old Samoyed puppy because “dog ownership turned out not to be for them”. See the screenshot of the ad below: Why is this so upsetting to see? This puppy looks to be well bred so I can say with almost certainty that the breeder who bred this dog carefully screened every person they entrusted one of their sweet puppies to. I can also say with certainty that every responsible breeder has it in their contract, a contract every buyer has to sign, that if for whatever reason the buyer cannot or no longer wishes to care for the dog, the dog has to be returned to the breeder – NOT sent to a shelter or sold on Craigslist to God knows whom. As a breeder it would absolutely break my heart if this was one of my puppies, a puppy I bred, out of my dogs whom I love dearly. For a responsible breeder, every puppy we produce is precious. We ask potential buyers a lot of questions, we make sure they understand the breed temperament, grooming and care needs, their energy levels. We do our best to match the right puppy to the right family. We want to stay in touch with every family we sell a puppy to for the life duration of that puppy, to help them with any problems, to answer questions. However we can only go off the information someone gives us, we cannot read minds or see...

Canine Good Citizen Test

The AKC Canine Good Citizen Test is a test designed for dog owners to demonstrate that their dog is well trained and behaved in a public setting. During the test the judge will look at the dog’s ability to listen to the owner’s commands, asses its reactions towards other people and dogs and see how the dog reacts to and copes with mildly stressful situations. A more experienced owner could easily train their dog for the test themselves but there are also plenty of dog schools which offer classes for it! Below is a video from SmartyPup! which goes through all the 10 steps of the test, check it out 🙂 Resources: AKC “About Canine Good Citizen” Test items and pledge Finding classes and...
